Event Vision

Wellspring is hosting a weekend event to launch History Lives Here, an exhibit of the Freemans, a prominent Black American family who owned and lived at the property where Wellspring is today. In addition, we’ll be sharing the stories of people working with Wellspring today to create a better life for themselves and their families.

Showcasing Gloucester’s Freeman Family Legacy & Wellspring’s Social Justice Mission
In 1826, the Freeman family came to live at the property where Wellspring is headquartered today. We are uncovering their untold family stories and achievements. Tied to Wellspring’s social justice mission, current students will be sharing their own success stories of overcoming barriers to create a brighter future. By celebrating all stories of success – especially those yet to be discovered – we fully empower our whole community to reach their potential.

FREE PUBLIC FESTIVAL & UNITY ART PROJECT
Saturday, June 10 | 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Come and learn about Gloucester’s Freeman family, Wellspring’s mission, and community life through exhibits, interactive art programming, music and more!

This event is part of Gloucester 400+, commemorating, celebrating, and promoting knowledge of Gloucester’s 400+ years of cultural, social, ethnic, and economic diversity.

The community is invited to experience Wellspring’s “History Lives Here” exhibit and interactive activities at no cost thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. Attendees are invited to learn about the Freeman family through the exhibit and interactive art programming with Artists Claudia Parachiv of Studioful Design and Azia Carle of Azia Artz. The artists will lead an interactive and collaborative free workshop and art-making process, Freeman Family Layers of Love, creating a meaningful experience for all ages and abilities. Families, children, and individuals are invited to participate in constructing a model of the Freeman homestead, and illustrate a two-page comic book based on reflections of the Freeman Family exhibit. Participants will help bring the Freeman house to life by adding reflections on their own families.

Community organizations will be on-site to engage with attendees on topics including racial justice, local history, and community engagement. The Blackburn Stompers will entertain with music from the 1830s to the 1930s, the Freeman-era. Food trucks will be onsite.

Both events will be held rain or shine.

Thank you for considering supporting Wellspring as a corporate sponsor and aligning with our vision to create a just society.
