After graduating from Gloucester High School, Briana (name changed for privacy) continued working at the catering job where she’d been hired as a high school student. She knew she wanted to pursue higher education, but she had anxiety surrounding traditional education and would be the first person in her family to pursue education beyond high school.
Briana was familiar with Wellspring from a Reading/Writing class taught by Wellspring staff at Gloucester High School, so she contacted Wellspring for guidance on where to begin the college application process. Our Youth and Young Adult Advisor worked with Briana to build confidence and break down her anxiety. In December 2019, she enrolled in Wellspring’s College Readiness classes, and ultimately applied at North Shore Community College, after gaining the confidence that she needed.
Briana is now enrolled in the Health Science program at North Shore Community College. She meets remotely several times a month with a mentor from Wellspring House to help her stay on track and work out details like financial aid, course selection and general college navigation.
This Wellspring success story was made possible by a grant from Sailors’ Snug Harbor supporting the Wellspring Educational Resource Collaborative and its work with Gloucester High School students.
