Foundations: English Composition in addition to our traditional College Readiness Classes. The Foundations Classes are designed for students who are either preparing to take our college readiness classes or who would simply like to increase their knowledge. Please see below to learn more about our spring course offerings.

Available Classes (Classes will begin the week of February 21, 2021):

College Readiness: Mathematics   
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

Wellspring House’s Adult Learning Initiative College Readiness Mathematics course is designed to establish a foundation for future college and career success. The course will focus on preparing students for the rigor of college-level academics while working with foundational arithmetic and algebraic concepts. Additionally, the course will develop students’ cognitive processes by explicitly addressing Bena Kalick’s and Arthur Costa’s Habits of Mind and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Potential to earn college credit through North Shore Community College. Students interested in enrolling in this course would need to complete a pre-test prior to enrolling in this class.

College Readiness: English Composition
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

In this course, students will be working at the college-level to read, analyze, and write essays about 20th century American literature. This course will focus on both preparing students for a future in college and engaging them in academic discourse while at Wellspring. Students will read one memoir, one novel, and several essays and poems. They will be expected to be able to speak and write critically on each of the assigned texts. We will discuss authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Tim O’Brien, Toni Morrison, and Langston Hughes. After this course, students should have a strong foundation in American literature and in all aspects of reading, writing, and discussing literature at a college-level.

Foundations: Mathematics   
Wednesdays, 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM

This class is designed for students who are either preparing to take college classes or who like increase their ability to perform foundational mathematical operations. Focus will be placed on Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division of Integers, Decimals, and Fractions. Operations will include both positive and negative numbers, along with an introduction to variable usage. Exponents and Powers will also be investigated. Students will be encouraged to not only perform the operations, but to explain the processes through spoken and written language. Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared to take Algebra 1.

Foundations: English Composition 
Wednesdays, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

This class is designed for students who are either preparing to take college classes or who would simple like to increase their knowledge of English Language Arts. Throughout the course, we will read one full-length text, several short stories/essay, and several poems. We will review conventions of grammar, literary devices and their uses, and the basics of writing a college-level argumentative essay. Each week, students will participate in analytical discussions and throughout the course, they will develop their ability to discuss literature at a high-level. Upon completion of this course, students will be prepared to take college-level courses.

All courses and materials including books, materials, and supplies are supplied at no cost to you. All classes will be held remotely via Zoom. Laptops are available to loan on a first come, first serve basis. Assistance available in navigating remote learning. Adults of all ages are encouraged to apply.
