The Freeman Family Story
In 2020, Wellspring embarked on a research initiative to explore the history of our headquarters in West Gloucester. Thanks to a grant through Mass Humanities and a partnership with researcher, Roopika Risam, Wellspring discovered more about the Freeman family, a prominent Black family who previously occupied the original homestead for three generations. Through this exploration, Wellspring learned the patriarch of the family, Robin Freeman, purchased his freedom from an enslaver in Gloucester in 1769.
In response to these findings, Wellspring launched a permanent public exhibit, where we share forgotten local history, while serving as a model for other property owners. To reserve your staff-led tour of the History Lives Here exhibit, please contact Mary Hardwick at mhardwick@wellspringhouse.org or by phone at 978-281-3558 x300.
