Job Description Summary:

The Director of Finance & Human Resources is a key leader within Wellspring who is vital to the success of the organization’s mission. They are responsible to oversee and manage financial and human resources functions and are a critical point person for staff and colleagues. The Director is a member of the Senior Team who works especially closely with Program Directors and the Director of Development to ensure that Wellspring’s resources effectively support our mission-based work. As a member of the Administrative Team, the Director’s leadership will support the strategic business planning for Wellspring House’s policies and values, ensuring that they are communicated and in practice across the organization. The Director provides supervision to the part-time Finance & HR Associate.


Ensure that the Organization’s accounting system and processes meet nonprofit audit standards; provide timely financial reporting; and enable strategic budgeting. Ensure that our financial systems support the growth of programs.

  • Ensure accuracy of general ledger and financial statements.
  • Responsible for the financial monthly close including reviewing accounts payable and receivables, payroll, bank reconciliations, and performing fluctuation analysis on revenue and expense accounts.
  • Prepare all materials needed for the annual audit and act as primary liaison with auditing firm. Ensure timely filings of the 990, UFR, etc. Fiscal year end is June 30th; the audit is conducted mid-August and requires time commitment to complete all necessary schedules.
  • Review and approve payroll for bi-weekly processing.
  • Prepare and track expenditures against Wellspring’s overall budget and program budgets.
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements for Executive Director and the Finance Committee of the board of Trustees.
  • Attend relevant Board of Trustees monthly meetings and all Finance Committee meetings (approximately 8/year for each). Primary liaison with the Finance Committee.
  • Oversee contract management including budgeting.
  • Prepare any financial reports requested by funders, financial partners, and federal, state, and local government entities.
  • Ensure all accounting and finance related policies are observed in accordance with U.S. GAAP and non-profit accounting standards.
  • Serve as primary liaison with key financial institutions (investment management, mortgage, banking).
  • Oversees company insurances.

Human Resources

Provide leadership and oversight of human resource functions including: training, compensation and benefits; onboarding, staff relations, performance evaluations and recruiting.

  • Coordinate employee onboarding, including I-9, CORI/SORI, benefit selection, etc.
  • Review all benefits on an annual basis and make recommendations for possible changes based on pricing and offerings available.
  • Manage Simple IRA plan and issue mandated notices annually.
  • Supervise the Finance & HR Associate who assists with the human resource functions.
  • Update employee handbook and performance review process as needed.
  • Work with the Executive Director on salary analysis annually and as needed.
  • Serve as a confidential resource for the Executive Director and the Senior Team regarding performance related issues.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required. Experience with non-profit accounting, knowledge of state contracts, and federal and private grant accounting is preferred. Candidates should possess strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proficient in Accounting software (Sage preferred) and MS Office Suite.
