Did you know that Wellspring’s main offices are housed in a first period colonial home built in Gloucester in 1649? Strikingly, the longest running owners of this property were Robert Freeman, a freed slave who we believe was from South Carolina, and three generations of his descendants, from the late 1700’s until approximately 1930.
How did this come to be? And what can we learn about ourselves through their history? As an organization deeply committed to social justice and helping local families to achieve financial security, racial equity is an essential, core part of who we are. Wellspring is embarking on a historical research project to understand more about the Freemans and families like theirs. We look forward to the journey.
